Since you’re reading this, we’ll assume that your looking for information about masquerade masks. You’ve probably been invited to a party or ball in the near future and while the idea sounds exciting, it’s easy to get overwhelmed when trying to learn what is appropriate to wear so we will start with the basics.
A masquerade ball or masquerade party is a social event where the attendees use masks and costumes to hide their identity. Obviously this will be fruitless with your friends because they will recognize you anyway, but it adds a fun level of mystery for strangers. Most of us are in the bad habit of analyzing people well before we even speak to them. At a this type of party, judging someone’s appearance won’t do you any good.
Generally a ball is considered more formal than a party, but make sure to check with the host to find out how elegant your disguise must be. A formal ball can consist of masquerade dresses, evening gowns, colorful tuxedos, and only small masquerade ball masks. But this can range to the complete other end of the spectrum where a party could consist of full, brightly colored costumes that completely shield your identity.
No matter what the level of formality is, the basic unit is the masquerade mask. The stereotypical mask covers only the area around your eyes, but with holes to clearly see your eyes. Masks that cover the whole face (called venetian masquerade masks) can also be acceptable, or any combination in between (the masks in Phantom of the Opera are a great example).
Besides the mystery, the fun part about this type of party is that your costume can be extremely colorful, extravagant, and outside your normal personality. You will see a lot of masks that are completely over the top, complete with feathers, sequins, and beads.
If a masquerade costume can be worn, generally guests will attempt to match the colors and/or design to their mask. Capes are a common feature that can be made quickly. Just pick out a fabric with matching colors, cut it to an appropriate length, and drape it over your shoulders.
Shopping for masks for masquerade ball can be quite fun, but buying a plain one and decorating it yourself can be even more fun. Lopsided mask designs with wild colors are my favorite, but the beauty of a self made mask is that you can personalize it exactly how you want to and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
