Venetian Masquerade Masks

Venetian masquerade masks are not inherently different from regular masquerade masks. The differentiation is commonly thought to mean that Venetian style masks cover the entire face to disguise the wearer even more. However, this is not directly implied by the name. Generally the style derives from historic Venice and the masks worn during a certain season and carnival of the era. However, any type of masquerade mask will pass as a Venetian mask these days. If there is one defining characteristic specific to this type of mask, it is that they are of a higher quality and perhaps even handmade.

Expensive, high quality Venetian masks are often made of a molded clay or paper mache. This allows the masks to be handmade and more authentic of the time period where molded plastic wasn’t an option. These masks may run in cost anywhere from the lows teens to over a hundred dollars each. Although, this is considered pricey for such an item, you have to consider the value that being handcrafted brings to the masks. At that point, they aren’t just a one-time use item, but they actually become collectible art.

You can also find plastic Venetian masquerade ball masks commonly available. Obviously these aren’t hand crafted and are more likely to be mass produced.  This has the side effect of allowing them to be widely distributed, so the price is naturally much lower. You can even buy plain versions that you can decorate yourself to make your mask completely unique.

If you’re looking for cheap Venetian masquerade masks, then you definitely want to go the plastic route. Although they aren’t of the fine quality as a handmade option, they will work well for a party and you won’t be disgusted if it gets ruined.

Authentic, hand crafted Venetian masks have actually turned into a collectible item. Many people actually consider them to be art when they are made at such a high level of craftsmanship. Historically, there was a profession dedicated to making these fine masks in Italy. Although that is a career path from the past, it shows the true skill that is required to make these amazing pieces.
